Talking Topically to Artificial Dialog Partners: Emulating Humanlike Topic Awareness in a Virtual Agent
نویسندگان
چکیده
During dialog, humans are able to track ongoing topics, to detect topical shifts, to refer to topics via labels, and to decide on the appropriateness of potential dialog topics. As a result, they interactionally produce coherent sequences of spoken utterances assigning a thematic structure to the whole conversation. Accordingly, an artificial agent that is intended to engage in natural and sophisticated human-agent dialogs should be endowed with similar conversational abilities. This paper presents how to enable topically coherent conversations between humans and interactive systems by emulating humanlike topic awareness in the virtual agent Max. Therefore, we firstly realized automatic topic detection and tracking on the basis of contextual knowledge provided by Wikipedia and secondly adapted the agent’s conversational behavior by means of the gained topic information. As a result, we contribute to improve human-agent dialogs by enabling topical talk between human and artificial interlocutors. This paper is a revised and extended version of [3].

Let's Talk Topically with Artificial Agents! - Providing Agents with Humanlike Topic Awareness in Everyday Dialog Situations
Spoken interactions between humans are characterized by coherent sequences of utterances assigning a thematical structure to the whole conversation. Such coherence and the success of a meaningful and flexible dialog are based on the cognitive ability to be aware of the ongoing conversational topic. This paper presents how to enable such topically coherent conversations between humans and intera...
متن کاملBelievable Virtual Characters in Human-Computer Dialogs
For many application areas, where a task is most naturally represented by talking or where standard input devices are difficult to use or not available at all, virtual characters can be well suited as an intuitive man-machineinterface due to their inherent ability to simulate verbal as well as nonverbal communicative behavior. This type of interface is made possible with the help of multimodal ...
متن کاملExperimenting with the Gaze of a Conversational Agent
We have carried out a pilot experiment to investigate the effects of different eye gaze behaviors of a cartoon-like talking face on the quality of human-agent dialogues1. We compared a version of the talking face that roughly implements some patterns of humanlike behavior with two other versions. We called this the optimal version. In one of the other versions the shifts in gaze were kept minim...
متن کاملSocial robots – emotional agents: Some remarks on naturalizing man-machine interaction
The construction of embodied conversational agents – robots as well as avatars – seem to be a new challenge in the field of both cognitive AI and human-computer-interface development. On the one hand, one aims at gaining new insights in the development of cognition and communication by constructing intelligent, physical instantiated artefacts. On the other hand people are driven by the idea, th...
متن کاملHuman-Like Agents for Repeated Negotiation
Virtual agents have been used as tools in negotiation—from acting as mediators to manifesting as full-fledged conversational partners. Virtual agents are a powerful tool for teaching negotiation skills, but require an accurate model of human behavior to perform well both as partners and teachers. The work proposed here aims to expand the current horizon of virtual negotiating agents to utilize ...
